Too Young To Rock?

Yesterday, Yahoo ran a story about 8 year old guitar prodigy Tallan "T-Man" Latz. The story reports that jealous older players complained to the state of Wisconsin prompting a ruling that he is too young to perform in bars and clubs, though he’ll continue to be allowed to perform at festivals, claiming it’s a violation of the state’s child labor laws.

While I’m a huge supporter of encouraging musical interests in children, and certainly believe musicians should embrace and support fellow performers, I actually have to side with the state in this scenario. Bars and clubs are venues intended for adults. In the many shows I’ve played, there’s always a drunk in the crowd who really wants to talk to you. I’ve also seen a handful of brawls and the occasional girl who feels the sudden urge to free herself from her confining clothes. Of course, events such as these don’t happen all the time, but they do happen and are certainly not the type of things I feel are appropriate for an 8 year old.

Hopefully, Tallan will continue to play and eventually tour. I’d love to see him some day...
