Learn the Changes...

As a performer, I understand taking artistic license with songs, even to the point of completely rearranging and reinventing a song. I typically don't follow the "sacred" song doctrine as there have been quite a few cases in which a cover of a tune has been significantly better than the original. Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower and Jeff Buckley's Version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah comes to mind. All that said, there's one song for which performers should tread lightly and that is the National Anthem (no matter what country you live in, but in this case the American National Anthem). Now there have been several very cool arrangements of the theme, and while it seems every female pop singer seems insistent in trying to out -soul one another I can even live with that. But The Fray's attempt at the 2012 NCAA National Championship Game will go down in my book as one of the worst, right down there with Rosanne Barr's purposefully horrible attempt and Christina Aguilera forgetting the words. If you're singer, you gotta know the lyrics...and if your a guitarist you gotta know the changes. Just shameful...
