4 DIY Straplock Ideas

Tuesday, May 4, 2010| by Will Chen

A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog about 5 Great DIY Accessory Projects. Well, since then I've been on a hunt and here's a few more very creative and frugal ideas focusing specifically on strap locks.

1. Duct Tape - Yes the good ole' fix-it-all.  Elegant? No Functional? Maybe according to forum member the other brother over at offsetguitars.com...

2. Bread ties - On an strict budget? After you finish your next loaf of bread, check to see if it has the plastic square ties. While these are a bit flimsy and likely won't stand up to long term abuse, they'll do in a pinch.

3. Grolsch Strap Lock - This trick has apparently been around for quite a few years.  I "discovered" it at the last Dallas International Guitar Festival when I saw them for sale at the Souldier booth. Grolsch (and many other European beer brands) feature  bottles with a a large red rubber washer which works perfectly as a strap lock. If you need step by step instructions, you can view them here.

4. Metal Washer Strap Locks - While taking a trip to the local hardware shop might not be as fun as taking a trip to the local pub (if you're a beer drinker that is), metal washers are a great strap lock option. While they don't offer the installation flexibility of rubber washers, they'll provide an extra level of durability to protect your precious axe. For a real professional slick look, opt for the countersuck screw option (if you can find them big enough).
